An Economic Alternative to Traditional Bone Cleaning Methods in Perserved Cadavers
(Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center, 2024) Gandarilla, Missy; Hubbard, John K.
Human osteological material is an essential part of research, education, physical, and 3D collections; however, attaining osteological samples can be expensive and time consuming. Cadavers from anatomical courses are a resource for osteological material. This resource requires cleaning and preparing the bones for educational or research settings. Several methods for removing soft tissue from bones in nonembalmed cadavers have been published, including laundry detergent, enzymatic maceration, insect consumption, and manual removal. These methods vary in cost effectiveness, time consumption, and health hazards.

From Moon-dust to Lunar soil: Growing crops in deep space
(Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center, 2024) Atkin, Jessica
Lunar regolith holds promise as a source of nutrients. Inaccessible elements and trace minerals found in regolith can be used to support plant growth and establish a sustainable lunar presence

Community willingness to participate in voluntary buyouts in Galen Park, TX
(Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center, 2023) Losa, L. M.
Texas is ranked 1st in the U.S. based on variety and frequency of natural disasters. More uniquely, Galena Park is an environmental justice (EJ) community and home to a vast amount of industry. Galena Park was also the site of the 2019 ITC Petrochemical Fire, which burned for 4 days, releasing toxic chemicals in the air. Houston holistically ranks 1st in the nation for toxic chemicals in the air, including benzene, mercury, 1-3 butadiene, and formaldehyde.

In-process cutting temperature monitoring method based on Impedance model of dielectric coating layer at tool-chip interface
(Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center, 2023) Chun, Heebum; Park, William; Kim, Jungsub; Lee, ChaBum
Controlling and monitoring the machining process are critical for manufacturing efficiency. â–ª However, monitoring the region of the tool-chip interface (TCI) is challenging due to the physical inaccessibility. â–ª Currently, there are no tools available in the commercial market for measuring and monitoring cutting processes at the TCI region. â–ª The proposed method measures the real-time cutting temperature by directly probing the localized TCI using a cutting tool coated with dielectric material. â–ª The application and expectation of this study is to provide real-time machining data to help end users in manufacturing industry to improve product quality, productivity, and prolonged lifespan of cutting tools.

Social vulnerability and policy: Changes associated with local land use and zoning in Kampen, Netherlands
(Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center, 2023) Eutsler, Tyler
As disasters increase in severity and frequency it is imperative to ensure community plans and policies avoid contradictions by holistically evaluating their progress towards resiliency. The Deprogramming Housing 2016 plan of Kampen is evaluated by creating a socially vulnerable index and calculating the change before and after implementation both inside and outside the effective policy boundary. It is found that across the five-year period of 2015 to 2020 there is a decrease in measured social vulnerability across the municipality following the Deprogramming Housing 2016 updates to existing land use and zoning policies within Kampen.

Taylor-Couette system for Superimposed-shear cavitation experiments
(Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center, 2023) Karber, Christer J.; J, Yuan; Byrd, Traves; Wilkerson, Justin W.
The newly developed superimposed shear cavitation experiment is applied to study soft material response under complex stress states. The experiment is developed based on research in Taylor-Couette flow and conventional needle-induced cavitation experiment

Enhancing the Army Experience: More Than a Numer, A Soldier
(Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center, 2023) Castillo, Lucas H.
Within the first two quarters of this year, 2022. The US Army has only met 40% of its fiscal year recruiting numbers. On average of all the military branches, the US Army has one of the lowest retention percentages. The Army has faced a major issue that has been getting worse and worse over the course of the past few years. Poor retention and recruiting numbers. Why are so many Americans no longer willing to serve or volunteer to serve? With global tensions rising in many different areas, there may soon be a need for a large American fighting force presence and, if the Army is not prepared, this may have a domino effect on our nation and other allied nations

Cash visibility through the internet of things (IoT)
(Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center, 2023) Decker, L. N.
The movement of cash within the U.S. is done primarily between banks, retailers, ATM machines, competitors, and the Federal Reserve Bank. Many of these transactions happen through armored truck companies (ATCs). ATCs are mired in traditional paper-based and barcode-based technologies that are inefficient and lack visibility to their customers.

Analyzing Select Antibiotics in Commercial Biosolid Fertilizers With Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry
(Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center, 2023) Rathbun, Kelly; Herrman, Tim; Li, Wei
The purpose of this research is to apply developed LC-MS/MS methods, such as U.S. EPA method 1694, to OTSC standard operating procedures, in order to characterize and quantify multiple antibiotics potentially found in commercial (Class A) biosolid fertilizer samples, which are regularly tested at OTSC for heavy metal contamination. A narrow field of antibiotic compounds with diverse physiochemical properties was chosen to test optimization of recovery from notoriously complex biosolids. Prior research studies have detected low concentrations of ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, and other pharmaceutical classes in Class A biosolids; it is expected through thorough method development we will be able to analyze them for quantification on LC-MS/MS.
