Frederick C. Cuny was an American humanitarian and preeminent disaster relief specialist who worked to improve the lives of people affected by natural and man-made disasters around the world. Over his 26 year career, Cuny worked in crises in more than fifty countries, including Biafra, Guatemala, Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Iraq, Kuwait, Somalia, Bosnia, and Chechnya. His larger than life personality, uncanny ability to “make things happen,” and his innovative ideas drove him to the forefront of the disaster response field.

The collection contains the working library, office files, press clippings, slides, photographs and Beta and VHS tapes of Cuny and his team at the disaster relief/response firm, Intertect, and at the non-profit organization he co-founded in 1987, the Intertect Institute. The items currently digitized represent a small section of the collection chosen for their significance by members of the Cuny Center for the Study of Societies in Crisis.

This report is a partial response to a Participating Agency Service Agreement between the Agency for International Development and the USDA, Forest Service (PASA Control No. TA(AJ)2-73) and concerns a study of the factors influencing the utilization of the tropical forest resource. The purpose of this portion of the PASA obligation is to present previously published information on the tree and wood characteristics of selected secondary species growing m seven tropical countries. The format is concise and follows the outline developed for the second edition of the "Handbook of Hardwoods" published by HMSO, London. Species selected for review are well known in the source countries, but make up a very small component, if any, of their export trade. The reasons why these species play a secondary role in the timber harvest are discussed in the other accompanying PASA reports.

Development of Low-Cost Roofing from Indigenous Materials in Developing Nations

This report covers Phase II (May 1974 through September 1975) of a 3-1/2 year research effort to match indigenous fibers and fillers with low cost binders to produce improved roofing for developing countries. The ultimate goal of the program is to make available, in at least three countries, one each in Latin America, Asia, and Africa, an economically and technically acceptable roofing system requiring less foreign exchange than existing alternatives.

Background notes on Planning A Continual Housing Project

Following a disaster, AID is often called upon to assist in reconstruction activities by helping to provide new, replacement housing for the disaster victims. In many cases, the victims will not only have suffered the loss of a building, but may also have lost their land or access to it as a result of the disaster or circumstances arising from the disaster. Thus, AID may be asked to assist in helping to provide both safe sites for reconstruction and replacement housing. For the AID program planner, there are a number of decisions which must be made prior to initiating a reconstruction program. These include: 1. The total number of people to be served. 2. Which economic groups to serve. 3. Whether the primary emphasis will be urban or rural. 4. Whether to become involved in land acquisition. A major consideration is that the majority of housing reconstruction approaches that can be taken by a foreign agency are limited to providing assistance to persons who own land or have long-term tenure relationships.Thus, until land is acquired or otherwise secured, most housing reconstruction programs normally begin by providing assistance to those people who have land or tenure.
