Item Initiative for Educational Excellence(2018-06-07) Ritter, Nicola; Macik, Maria; Chaney, KristinFollowing a comprehensive curricular redesign, the Texas A&M Initiative for Educational Excellence was established to provide data-driven program evaluation, support for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), and opportunities for faculty development. Throughout that year the different disciplines of study on campus choose to celebrate by hosting special events and ceremonies. On February 2, 1976, Governor Dolph Briscoe spoke to students and former students commending them for their high moral characters and outstanding leadership. The College of Veterinary Medicine marked the year with speakers, panel discussions and social events depicted in these images, that have not been specifically unidentified.Item Stockyard That BurnedCollege of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical SciencesThis might be the Kansas City, West Bottoms fire of 1917, as the image closely matches museum photographs.Item Farrell Brothers, number 2College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical SciencesBrothers, Dr. Joseph Milton Farrell, Jr. and Dr. Don Farrell opened their veterinary practice together on August 9th, 1948 in Arlington, Texas. Their father Dr. J. M. Farrell Sr. was also a practicing veterinarian when the boys were young and inspired them to one day want to open their own clinic. In 1948 Dr. Farrell Sr. was the city meat inspector for the city of Fort Worth. Joseph Farrell graduated from Texas A&M Veterinary School in 1944 and spent three and a half years with the Veterinary Corps of the Army, being discharged in January, 1947. In June, 1948 his brother Don, also graduated from Texas A&M with his D.V.M. holding a reserve commission in the Army.Item Fever Barn, number 5College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical SciencesVeterinary Research Barn- "Fever Barn" where much of the early work on Texas Fever was done. Bowen served as the twenty first president of Texas A&M University from 1994 until 2002. During his tenure Bowen initiated the Vision 2020 project, and Texas A&M was made a member of the Association of American Universities. Ray Bowen received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University and his Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. He returned to Texas A&M to earn a Doctoral Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1961. As a cadet, Bowen was the Deputy Corps Commander and a Ross Volunteers Platoon Leader.Item Breed Registration, number 22College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical SciencesItem 2000 Commencement Exercises, number 065College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical SciencesItem Humane Society, number 08College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical SciencesAccording to the Spring-Summer issue of "News from AggieLand" in 1995; faculty and staff of the College's small animal hospital submitted the design for surgical facilites at the new Austin and Travis County Humane Society. It included a prep room, small pharmacy, scrub room, a recovery room and a surgical area with five tables. Through an agreement with this and other local Humane Societies, fourth-year students could gain experience with hands on neutering and spayings and also help the community. Dr. Shadduck received his DVM from Ohio State University in 1963 and a Masters in 1965, followed by a PhD. In 1967. His specialty was Veterinary Pathology and his first position was at Ohio State as a teacher and researcher in 1968. In 1973 Southwestern Medical School in Dallas offered him a position as Associate Professor of Comparative Pathology where he stayed for 8 years. His next move was to the University of Illinois as a Department Head, and in 1987 he joined the faculty at the Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences College at Texas A&M. In 1988 he served as interm Dean; and was appointed Dean of the College in 1990. By 1997 he had left College Station and ended his professional career in Fort Collins, CO. where he worked for an animal health company and started his own consulting firm. In 2003 John and his wife Mary Lou retired to live in Robson Ranch in Denton, Texas. As of 2014 it was confirmed that John and Mary Lou were living at the Highland Spring retirement facility in Ohio.Item Frank SteinCollege of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical SciencesDr. Frank Stein earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 1965. In the early 2000's Dr. Stein was also the coordinator for the CVM Occupational Health Program, whos' job it was to inforce State health codes requireing students to receive a pre-exposure prophylaxis series of injections. Frank Stein, DVM taught at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine for many years and became Director of the Veterinary Medical Park. The Park existed to serve the faculty and students of the College of Veterinary Medicine. And to provide the best facilities, pasture, and animal care services in order that their customers can accomplish their research and teaching goals.
