Abstract
Power control is used in the reversed link to reduce the near-far problem in multi-user code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. Power estimation is one of the key aspects of the power control scheme. We compare and evaluate three power estimation techniques, the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm, the decorrelating estimator and the averaging method, on both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels. The implementation of the EM algorithm on TMS320C62 is also presented. The performance is compared by using extensive simulation results in a number of parameters, such as mean square error (MSE), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the number of users, the interference to signal ratio, and Doppler spread. The EM algorithm has the best overall performance and can be implemented in real-time systems.
