The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) allocates maintenance funds annually to each district from the central office. The district personnel are concerned that the allocation of maintenance funds is not based on the true maintenance needs, and they think that it should be based on actual needs. The databases within TXDOT were reviewed to determine the data available in them that could be used in the determination of the maintenance needs. The data collection and storage methods currently adopted by TXDOT were also reviewed to determine if there is a possibility for improvement that would expedite the process and give better results. Other States were contacted to determine the methods adopted by them to collect and store the data related to the highway system. Their efforts to integrate the databases were also reviewed to determine the feasibility of adopting their methods to TXDOT. Recommendations are given for data collection, data storage and database integration requirements that will help TXDOT determine the maintenance needs in a realistic manner.en
