Abstract
The objective of this research project is to combine CAD and animation packages in a way that would create a 3D animation with CAD data as a research tool, a teaching tool, and a presentation tool. To demonstrate this process, AutoCAD was chosen as a CAD package and Softlmage was chosen as an animation package. The data I used in this project was the 12th pier in the north aisle of the choir in the Cathedral of Narbonne, France. Since translation problems was found using both packages, the Han-Translator was developed. After the pier data was translated successfully with the Han-Translator, the quality of the pier model was not good enough for a 3D model's animation. In SoftImage, the new pier model was created with the pier data translated and the 3D model's animation was created with the stone texture on it. Using this 3D model's animation, an evaluation of the models' ability to serve as a research tool, a teaching tool, and a presentation tool was performed.
