dc.description.abstract | The compaction of the landfill clay liner at wet of optimum moisture content with a suitable type of compaction is the most common way of decreasing liner hydraulic conductivity. However, when the clay liner compacted in this way is located in an and region, it loses water and cracks. Cracks decrease the performance of the clay liner as a contaminant barrier. The loss of water is due to the suction head gradient between the liner and the and region soil. In this research, a laboratory test method to determine the soil suction is proposed. A dew point hygrometer was used to measure the soil suction. Calibration experiments were run with salt solutions at different osmotic suction levels. Control experiments were conducted with clay soils of predetermined suction with a transistor psychrometer. The design and development stages of the suction measuring device are explained. A calibration model is proposed. The replacement of the temperature sensor and modification of the air tubing used in the device are recommended to improve the accuracy and reliability of the measurements. | en |
