The objectives of deaeration of feedwater are reviewed. A discussion of appropriate test data and methods for assessing deaerator performance are given. Analysis procedures are developed to analyze the test data. Typical problems such as over or underheating, excessive venting, insufficient O2/CO2 gas removal, pressure of non-condensable gases, etc. are discussed from the following standpoints: (1) use of test data to identify and quantify problem, and (2) techniques to solve problems. A second part of the paper discusses optimization of deaerators in a given setting taking into account such factors as availability of waste steam and boiler heat recovery. This discussion includes a description of a test/adjustment program to accomplish optimization. The results of the paper allow industrial operators of boiler systems to analyze and upgrade deaerator operation to drastically reduce maintenance and energy cost.en
