Implementing MSE 2000: Procedures
Abstract
Historically, energy management has relied almost exclusively on short-term, crisis driven approaches. Many times these are high cost technology driven approaches while low capital opportunities are overlooked. Unfortunately, shortsighted solutions do not spawn lasting procedures, and the advances achieved through crisis management are not sustained without formal procedures and an organizational commitment to continual improvement, efficiency gains made during an energy dilemma are quickly lost. Eventually the site regresses to pre-crisis energy consumption.
To improve energy management so that achievements are sustained and built upon, Georgia Tech has formulated a management system for energy. The management system for energy, MSE 2000, focuses on improved management practices to positively impact energy efficiency. MSE 2000 is a documented standard that contains the essential elements of the management system. Modeled on the same principles as other management systems, MSE 2000 is flexible enough to be applied in a wide variety of situations. Experiences in the initial implementation of MSE 2000 at an industrial site are presented and discussed to serve as a guide for future users.
