This project examines three British novels, which look back in history to World War II and one novel that romanticizes the Vietnam War. The novels that make up my research are Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh, The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, Waterland by Graham Swift, and The Beach by Alex Garland. In each novel I have analyzed the soldiers and American characters that appear and discuss the role these characters play in the novel. Specifically I am concerned with their impact they have on the American image portrayed in the novels, the changing British national identity, and British masculinity. After this analysis my paper moves from the novels to their movie counterparts and discusses the changes that occur in the Hollywood make over of these novels. The discussion shows how these alterations can completely altar an author’s vision for his work.en
