Reliable Overspeed Protection For Industrial Drive Turbines
Abstract
The paper discusses the fundamental relationships between turbine overspeed and the time constant of the rotor. The amount of overspeed is shown to be related not only to the time lag of the emergency tripping devices, but also to the amount of thermal energy stored in piping to the turbine. Methods of protecting against overspeed are described and discussed. The use of red1mdant and "fail-safe" designs is given as a way of arriving at a system to give reliable protection of the turbine against overspeed.
