This discussion briefly summarizes some of the devices, seal systems, and operating parameters encountered with turbines and compressors, but because of the magnitude of technical information that would be required, the writer has omitted any comments related to some of the more recent developments, such as welded bellows and aspirated circumferential liquid seals. It is hoped that the topic description presented herein serves as a basis for further technical study and, therefore, understanding that will facilitate the utilization of seal theory in applications.en
