There are many gear tooth and gearbox rating standards existing in the world. For a given gearbox, the rating system that is used can give very different answers in the amount of power that can be transmitted. If a user is not specific or does not have a basic understanding of the different rating systems, the price and the reliability of the gearbox can be dramatically affected. The intent of this tutorial is to simplify, then compare the current API, AGMA, ISO, and DIN gear standards to help the inexperienced or casual user make intelligent decisions. The probable changes to API and ISO that should occur in the near future are also discussed.en
