The recent article by Chen et al. (1998; henceforth Chen) concludes that three processes were important to the development of a particular low-level jet (LLJ) associated with a mei-yu front: (1) a transverse circulation caused by thermal wind adjustment at the entrance region of a jet streak; (2) a direct circulation driven by deep convection along the frontal zone; and (3) slantwise convection maintained by conditional symmetric instability. We find problems with the methodology and interpretation of all three phenomena.en
