Abstract
Differences among individual purebred parents of [] aphics. Brahman: [] Angus [] and [] Angus: [] Brahman[] offspring populations were determined for Warner-Bratzler shear force(WBS), marbling(MARB) and sensory panel overall tenderness(TENDER) values. [] progeny for WBS (3.32[]1: .93 kg, CV = 28.01%, n = 218), (459.27 [] 105.85 units, CV = 23.04%, n = 256) and TENDER (5.83 [] .81 units, CV = 13.89%, n = 220) represented four sires and three dams. [] progeny represented three sires and three dams for WBS (3.85 [] 1. 16 kg, CV = 30.07%, n = 184), (366.52 [] 67.84 units, CV = 18.51%, n = 201) and TENDER (5.08 [] .99 units, CV = 19.56, n = 184). Individual purebred parents, nested crossbred parents, sex, slaughter year and season elects on WBS, MARB and TENDER were modeled. Adjusted fat thickness (AJF), slaughter weight (SLW), slaughter age (SLA), hot carcass weight (HCW), yield grade (YG) and quality grade (QG) were included in the initial model as covariables to detect their elect in MA118, WBS and TENDER. MF and YG were significant for WBS and MARB, and MF, HCW and YG (P < .01) for TENDER. MAO analysis in [] progeny indicated differences (P < .05) among Angus sires with the superior bull (553.5 [] 16.8,. MODEST) and among the dams with the superior dam (522.5 [] 23.2,. MODEST). Only one Brahman cow was different (P < .05) from other dams (417 [] 1 1.5, SMALL). No significant differences (P > .05) were found for WBS among parents, with ranges of 3. 14 to 4.01 and 3.62 to 4.34 kg for Angus and Brahman parents reflexively. TENDER values ranged from 5.44 to 6.23 and 4.58 to 5.67 units for Angus and Brahman parents respectively and differences were found among the Brahman sires with the inferior bull (P < .05). Results were based on full sibling progeny test numbers of 10 to 42 per parent. These results assure the potential to segregate breeding animals within both breeds for but indicate a limited opportunity to separate individuals on WBS and TENDER without major time and cost in progeny testing.
