The literary representation of certain Spanish castaways who lived among the North American Indians
Abstract
The narrations of the Sixteenth Century Spanish castaways occupy one of the most dramatic places in the cultural history of the New World. They document a cultural process that was the antithesis of Spanish colonization. During their life among the Indians, the castaways adopted indigenous traits in order to survive, and many of them experienced the process of indigenization. However, becoming "indigenized Spaniards" was a scandalous concept among the Spanish colonists during the Sixteenth Century. As a result, the colonial disdain for indigenization created a spectrum in the literary representation of the castaways in the chosen works of the present thesis. These literary reactions range from the denial of indigenization to the recognition of indigenization. The narrations that deny indigenization relate the experiences of the castaways in the contexts of demonization and indifference. The narrations that recognize indigenization relate the experiences of the castaways in the contexts of restraint and acceptance. These four rhetorical styles reflect the variety of the norms and prejudices of colonial society as well as the complexity of the studied texts.
